Bowermans Nose stands on the northern slopes of Hayne Down ,Dartmoor near Manaton.Its called the Bowermans Nose because of its shape. At one time it was thought to be man made, but Legend has it a friendly giant named Bowerman liked to go hunting with his huge pack of hounds across  Hayne Down. Unfortunately for him a group of witches lived there and forbade him to cross their land. He ignored their warnings and was instantly turned to stone so that he would stand forever and watch over the Down. The scattered stones and boulders surrounding this site are supposed to be his hounds that were also turned to stone. There are many granite stacks  like Bowermans Nose across Dartmoor but perhaps none quite so striking
