Haytor Quarry - Dartmoor

Haytor Down is one of Dartmoor's most popular visitor destinations, and the massive granite outcrop of Haytor Rock itself is a notable and widely recognised landmark. The granite from Haytor was once the focus of intense industrial activity when, in the 1820s, George Templer, a local businessman, began quarrying the stone on a large scale from Haytor quarry and exporting it to supply building projects elsewhere in Britain, mainly in London. Haytor granite was renowned for its crushing strength and was used in many prestigious London building projects, including most notably London Bridge, which is believed to have been the first large contract for the stone and probably the reason the tramway was built across dartmoor.
